Dodecanamine appears as a yellow liquid with an ammonia-like odor. Insoluble in water and less dense than water. Hence floats on water. Contact may irritate skin, eyes and mucous membranes. May be toxic by ingestion, inhalation or skin absorption. Used to make other chemicals.
White waxy solid. Soluble in ethanol, benzene, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride, but insoluble in water. Relative density 0.8015. Melting point: 28.20 ℃. Boiling point 259 ℃. The refractive index is 1.4421.
Using lauric acid as the raw material and in the presence of a silica gel catalyst, ammonia gas is introduced for amination. The reaction product is washed, dried, and distilled under reduced pressure to obtain refined lauryl nitrile. Transfer lauryl nitrile into a high-pressure vessel, stir and heat it to 80 ℃ in the presence of an active nickel catalyst, repeatedly hydrogenation and reduction to obtain crude laurylamine, then cool it down, undergo vacuum distillation, and dry it to obtain the finished product.
This product is an organic synthetic intermediate used in the production of textile and rubber additives. It can also be used to produce ore flotation agents, dodecyl quaternary ammonium salts, fungicides, insecticides, emulsifiers, detergents, and disinfection agents for preventing and treating skin burns, nourishing and antibacterial agents.

As a modifier in the preparation of dodecylamine incorporated sodium montmorillonite. It is used as an adsorbent for hexavalent chromium.
