The Application of Surfactants in China

The Application of Surfactants1 The Application of Surfactants2

Surfactants are a class of organic compounds with unique structures, with a long history and a wide variety of types. The traditional molecular structure of surfactants contains both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts, thus possessing the ability to reduce water surface tension – which is also the origin of their names. Surfactants belong to the fine chemical industry, which has a high degree of technology intensity, a variety of product types, high added value, wide applications, and strong industrial relevance. They directly serve many industries in the national economy and various fields of high-tech industries. The development of China’s surfactant industry is similar to the overall development of China’s fine chemical industry, both of which started relatively late but developed rapidly.

At present, the downstream application of surfactants in the industry is very extensive, involving various fields of the national economy, such as water treatment, fiberglass, coatings, construction, paint, daily chemical, ink, electronics, pesticides, textiles, printing and dyeing, chemical fibers, leather, petroleum, automotive industry, etc., and is expanding to various high-tech fields, providing strong support for high-tech industries such as new materials, biology, energy, and information. Domestic surfactants have established a certain industrial scale, and the production capacity of large-scale surfactants has greatly improved, which can meet basic domestic needs and export some products to the international market. In terms of technology, the basic process technology and equipment are relatively mature, and the quality and supply of main raw materials are relatively stable, providing the most basic guarantee for the diversified development of the surfactant industry.

The center will focus on launching an annual monitoring report for surfactant products (2024 version), which includes seven types of surface active agents: non ionic surface active agents, ionic surface active agents, bio based surface active agents, oil based surface active agents, special surface active agents, surface active agents used in the daily chemical industry, and surface active agents used in the textile industry.
